Artemis Fowl is a fanciful book about a budding teen aged prodigy with a criminally inclined mind. Artemis plans a brilliant scheme to steel gold from the mythical creatures more commonly known as fairies. This quest leads him to find a sickened sprite and take the information in her book, or a magical book explaining the rules of magic. Using this knowledge he plans a heist and kidnaps a fairy. Enter LEPrecon agent Caption Holly Short, taken while preforming her ritual, or her magic re-powering thing. Artemis takes her in hopes of getting a ransom of gold. The whole book is about the LEPrecons trying to get Holly back and Artemis battling them off with his cunning foresight.

This book was written for younger kids, so I did not gain complete enjoyment from it, but all in all it was a good book. Colfer directs the story at every turn but leaves twists in the plot to keep the reader on their toes. Somethings that I really liked was the narraters snide remarks in the beginning and end of the book. I also liked the setting because Ireland is an amazing place. The book was entertaining because the characters had depth and movement. I think that this book is a great start to a series and am looking forward to reading the rest of Artemis Fowl's adventures.

The Merchant of Death is a story about a boy named Bobby Pendragon. At first he is just a normal boy with and average like. Then his favorite uncle shows up unexpectedly. Bobby goes with Uncle Press. Bobby is then thrown into the life of a traveler, a protector of the universe who has the ability to travel to any place and time through flumes. Before Bobby even has the ability to comprehend what happened to him, he is transported to Denduron, a providence that is in chaos because two tribes that have never coexisted well are put into further strife. The Milago, or the serving tribe, is abused by the Bedoowan, or the ruling tribe. Uncle Press is taken by the Bedoowan leaving Bobby and his fellow travelers, Loor and Alder, tho try a harrowing rescue mission. But under all of this plot stuff there is an underline plot that is much more significant in the grand scheme of things. It is the fight against another traveler named Saint Dame,(Saint Dame is evil in case you did not catch that).
The actual writing of this book is well done, while it is only the first book in this series it draws in the reader. One of the things that was very interesting was that the as the book progressed the reader finds out things at the same time Bobby, so you feel the confusion and fear that Bobby feels. MacHalf was detailed and precise with his language which added to the affect and made the reading experience all together more enjoyable. It was also written in two points of view, the view point of Bobby threw letters to his friends Mark and Courtney back on second earth(earth) and the view point of his friends as they receive the letters. This brings a break in the action, it allows you to take a step back and collect your thoughts. All together I really liked the book

         I was told to read 1984 by one of my friends, I said yes, it was amazing and creepy. The first and second part of the book describes the world that Winston Smith lives in, from the beginning of the day with Physical Jerks, the form of exercise that the people do to stay functional, to the bleakness of his work editing information at the Ministry of Truth, or "minitrue" in the thought limiting language called Newspeak. Winston lashes out against the omnipresent Thought Police and the ruler Big Brother. In the third part of the book I was warned by my fried that shit would go down, and it did. Winston and his lover Julie try to escape their life of oppression by joining the brotherhood, an organization that is trying to undermine Big Brother, once they are in the mess they try to avoid punishment by the Ministry of Love, or "minilov" in Newspeak.
        The actual writing style of 1984 was brilliant. Orwell uses a sterile mater-of-fact tone to describe horrific things as if they were absolutely normal, like buying  coffee. He then changes his tone as the book progresses into that of a desperate man, a man who has no way out . The ideas in the book resonate with everyone fears for the world. The term Big Brother is still used now. While this book was not easy to read, it is a book that everyone should read.
